What Are Martial Arts?

Martial Arts are a means of self-defence that requires concentration, effort and positive attitude. It is also a method of physical and mental conditioning and by nature is a very goal oriented activity. Martial Arts training will teach physical skills which you can retain for a lifetime, as well as ways of thinking and dealing with everyday problems.

What Do Martial Arts Offer?

The main reason people take up Martial Arts is for its self-defence value. This in turn will build confidence in yourself and help you stand up to certain difficult situations. Practising the Martial Arts, although strenuous, can be a relaxing and very enjoyable fitness exercise and is superb for body conditioning. Classes are set up to provide a challenging, fun, cardiovascular workout for each student. You don't need any special equipment and any equipment needed can be purchased through our club at a discount, rather than paying top retail prices. You can practise at your own convenience anywhere, even in your own home. Students find that practising the Martial Arts develops co-ordination and also increases strength and flexibility. We try to make the learning experience both pleasant and fun and you should enjoy the atmosphere at the club, whether it's working with the instructor, or a combination of exercising and socialising. Studying the Martial Arts has many benefits for both young and old alike, with many people going on to live long and healthy lives.

Children's Training Programmes

At our club, we strive to make our children's classes as fun and exciting as we can, while teaching respect and self-discipline. Our philosophy is to teach youngsters basic values, such as respect for themselves and others, through training hard and goal achievement. Children gain self-confidence from learning different skills and with the much publicised bullying at various schools, we find that they can usually handle these intimidating situations fairly well.

Will Martial Arts Make My Child Aggressive?

Many parents worry that Martial Arts Training will make their children overly aggressive. On the contrary, Martial Arts are taught to only be used for self-defence. Students learn to respect the ability that they have, to know that the only appropriate place for their skills is in a club environment or in a self defence-situation. Our students also develop a sense of respect for when they are confronted with peer pressure in relation to gangs and drugs.

Finding The Right Club

It is important that you find the right class for you. You will be spending a great deal of your spare time practicing with other people so it’s important that you are happy with your teacher and co-students. Most importantly, it is vital that you find a bona fide club, which should be recognised. The reason for this is that all students should have some form of insurance protection against third party claims. By the same token, instructors should be insured against claims for professional negligence. Clubs should operate a licencing system, which is recognised and supported by their national body for exactly these reasons. If the club you are interested in does not provide these things then you have to seriously question their motives. Just because somebody claims to be a black belt, does not mean that they are genuine or indeed particularly knowledgeable. There are a lot of charlatans purporting to teach Martial Arts these days, so it’s important, for your own safety to check the background of a club by contacting the parent association, if necessary. You should always make sure that the club is run in a safe and professional manner.

Do Martial Arts Give Value For Money?

When you think of the benefits of training in Martial Arts in relation to other activities, there is simply no comparison. You will be practising an art that is both fun and enjoyable to learn and not only could it protect yourself or your loved ones from serious injury, but it could in fact one day save your life. Where else can you practise in a class without any special equipment and for only a few pounds? Compare this to the high cost equipment one usually associates with other activities and this is even before you have had a chance to try out a lesson.
